The SP-230 heated pyranometer is a game-changer in the measurment of shortwave radiation in cold, harsh climates that challenge accuracy. The SP-230 contains a small heater that raises the sensor approximately 3° C above ambient temperature using 12V power and drawing only 0.18 Watts. This small temperature offset prevents frost from forming on the pyranometer and occluding the sensor’s optical path. The sensor also comes with an elevated base to minimize snow cover and insulate the housing from leveling plates and mounting fixtures. The innovative design is so effective it compares favourably with other pyranometers drawing up to 15 Watts and requiring AC power supply.
All Apogee pyranometers incorporate a silicon-cell photodiode that measures total shortwave radiation and exhibit excellent cosine response for more accurate measurements at low sun angles. The sensor head is dome shaped and fully potted making it self-cleaning and fully weatherproof.
The Apogee SP-230 heated pyranometer is an effective, low cost, low power option for installation on all cold-climate stations, even when reliant on solar panels for power.
