Distillation of Cut-Back Asphaltic (Bituminous) Products

Distillation apparatus accurately determines residue content and separates volatile and non-volatile cut-back asphaltic products. Distillation apparatus accurately determines residue content and separates volatile and non-volatile cut-back asphaltic products. The distillation procedure measures the amount of the more volatile materials in cut-back asphaltic products. The properties of the residue after distillation may not be characteristic of the original bitumen mixture or the residue, which may be left at any particular time after the application of the cut-back product. Two hundred millilitres of the sample are distilled in a 500ml flask at a controlled rate to a temperature in the liquid of 360°C and the volumes of distillate at specific temperatures is measured.
