The Soil Volume Change Meter (PVC) is used to evaluate potentially dangerous swelling or shrinking conditions existing in some clay soils used in residential and commercial developments.
The device was originally developed by the Federal Housing Administration after considerable research to provide satisfactory background laboratory testing data, a summarization of mechanisms causing volume change in soils and the factors influencing these changes. PVC refers to the maximum possible volume change that a soil could undergo when subjected to changing moisture conditions.
